english weekly news June 30th - July 6th
The week actually went well, even though we were again stuck in Davos for two days due to bad weather.
Statistic
day: 57
peaks: 133/460
On Sunday we started up to 3600 meters from the Marco e Rosa hut, which is on the Italian side below the Piz Bernina (Graubuendens highest peak). A photographer from Flims (Gaudenz Danuser) came with us to take pictures for Mammuts next years catalogue (Mammut equips us with hardware and clothing as one of our main sponsors). Conditions were great and the weather was on the edge during the whole day we were up there. Luckily the thunderstorm started only when we were on the way back to Davos.
On Monday we climbed three peaks above the Oberengadin. The quality of the rocks on the first one was about as crappy as it can get. So we were joking about us having done a second ascent after Mr. Coaz. He was the man who did many first ascends here in Graubuenden around the 1850s. On Tuesday as well as on Thursday it was raining a lot so we took a break.
On Wednesday we had four peaks east of the well known Piz Kesch on the program. It started to rain after we had been hiking for about half an hour. We stumbled across a dead Steinbock which was killed in an avalanche this spring. The first to peaks were easier to be reached then the second two. So hoping for the weather to improve, we postponed the more difficult peaks for the afternoon. After the second one (Piz Porchabella which might mean pretty pig?!) we waited on the glacier for the now heavy rain to stop. It did not happen. So we ate while we were hanging out on the glacier before we slid down the glacier on our butts. On the way out we packed the head with the horns of the avalanche victim we had found on the way up.
We decided to have it mounted and make it the Graubuenden3000-Bock. On Friday we met with very famous mountain photographer Röbi Bösch (Oberägeri, Switzerland) on Julierpass. He accompanied us on our trip to Piz Albana and Piz Julier. On Saturday the forecast was better for the south side of the Alps so we went to southeastern Switzerland, which is also southeastern Graubuenden. In pouring rain which turned into heavy snowfall further up we were able to do four peaks.
On days like that it is hard to get going in the morning and we feel tired after having been exposed to the elements for several hours. Even though we started on an elevation of 2500 meters, we still did almost 15 km (approx. 10 miles) and about 2650 (approx. 8480 ft) vertical meters. We are at 133 peaks now and there are still 327 more to climb. Insane? We guess so. But we are going on, taking it day by day, still thoroughly enjoying what we are doing.
